For the first time since taking office almost 14 months ago, the president will travel Tuesday to the nation's most populous state.

Among those accompanying Trump on his tour was a Border Patrol agent who told the president it "changed our environment" when the government erected the first border barriers in San Ysidro in the 1990s.

It's his first visit to California as president.

"Washington wants to abandon part of America based on politics", said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, a potential candidate for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.

A protest organized by the political group Union Del Barrio is scheduled to take place in Beverly Hills Tuesday at approximately 4 p.m. ahead of Trump's arrival at the fundraiser, where donors will pay $250,000 to attend.

Fresh off a cabinet reshuffle, President Donald Trump was headed for Democratic stronghold California on Tuesday to inspect prototypes of the controversial border wall with Mexico that was the centerpiece of his White House campaign.

"You see, in California we are focusing on bridges, not walls", Brown wrote.

"Its growth has been incredible", Lafakis said. "Your continuing success is essential to the success of our national economy".

An estimated 1.7 million illegal immigrants are expected to cross into the United States in the next decade if no wall is built, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

"It's really important that as a region, as a city that has firsthand understanding of what the border wall means for our communities, that we stand against [this] and we send a strong message to say this is something that we don't welcome", City Councilwoman Georgette Gomez said Monday.

Last week, the Trump administration filed suit against California challenging a new state law that restricts how and when state law enforcement can interact with federal immigration authorities. But the law only prohibits state policies that restrict the sharing of immigration status and citizenship information - not release dates, addresses, or any other personal information.

Long before the president arrived, demonstrators - for and against - prepared to greet him.

"The State of California is sheltering risky criminals in a brazen and lawless attack on our constitutional system of government", Trump said in his weekly address. He's fought every version of the administration's travel ban.

AB 103 expands state oversight of California's local detention facilities when they hold people under contracts with ICE because federal oversight of the ICE detention system is woefully inadequate.

The incumbent attorney general, who was appointed to his position by Brown, faces an election challenge by the state's insurance commissioner, Dave Jones, who has relentlessly criticized Trump's moves to erode Obamacare.

California's Republican leaders, however, may view this political theatre very differently: as the equivalent of a man sawing a tree branch on which they - and he - all sit.

-They are colored beige, brown and gray. California recognizes that situation makes everyone less safe.

"He (Trump) would be welcome as our president if he stopped his racism, if he stopped bidding people once and for all against each other, if he acted like a president, if he had a little decency". The president's popularity is above 50% in only 12 states, according to the polling organization Gallup.

The state is still useful to Republicans as a source of campaign cash.

The two sides were separated Tuesday by a heavy presence of police officers in helmets and riot gear, but the protests were peaceful.

"We don't arrest law-abiding people", Homan said.
