About 45 people were aboard the bus.

The passengers are band members from Channelview High School in Texas, according to WKRG.

The school district could not be reached to confirm that information, KHOU said. Medical officials said at least 37 people, a lot of them teenagers, were treated at hospitals or other facilities in Pensacola and southwest Alabama for injuries that ranged from minor to very serious.

Torres, a former Channelview High School student, said his family originally couldn't get a hold of Bianca and those moments were absolutely terrifying. "We are now focused on getting everyone back safely to our community".

Seven to eight medevac helicopters were used to take the injured to area hospitals, including University of South Alabama Hospital, reported.

Officials say the bus was returning to Houston from a school trip to Disney World. Those had to either be brought up by ropes or rappelling individuals from the fire department during the rescue operation. Rescuers used the jaws of life to help free students from the bus. "In fact, it's in route to Texas as we speak".

Multiple people were transported by ambulances and helicopters to about 10 hospitals from Pensacola to Mobile.
