The bypolls were necessitated after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya vacated their Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats after getting elected to the state legislative council.

Much is at stake both for the ruling party and the Opposition as the prestigious Gorakhpur and Phulpur seats go to poll on Sunday.

Gorakhpur is the parliamentary constituency and stronghold of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

If Gorakhpur recorded only 43% voting, the figure was even lower in Phulpur at 37.39%, as per Joint Chief Election Officer Ramesh Chandra Rai. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) have extended support to the SP candidate.

The state has suffered the negative consequences (of SP and BSP).

Counting of votes in both states will be carried out on March 14.

Ghanshyam Chand Kharwar, the BSP's Gorakhpur zonal coordinator, however, said the voters were uninterested because the governments of Narendra Modi and Yogi Adityanath were serving only corporate houses.

In Uttar Pradesh, a total of 22 candidates including BJP, SP and Congress nominees are in contest from Phulpur in Allahabad district and 10 candidates from Gorakhpur seat.

Nagendra Pratap Patel, Samajwadi candidate from Phulpur, said: "The way the BSP cadres are working for me is awesome".

In Bihar, voting for by-election in Araria Lok Sabha seat and two assembly seats in Jehanabad and Bhabua are being held.

The death of RJD MLA Mundrika Singh Yadav necessitated the bypoll for Jehanabad seat, and his son Uday Yadav is contesting for the seat. Gorakhpur has 970 polling centres and 2,141 polling stations. As many as 4,728 voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines are being used in the bypoll and provisions for webcasting from 95 critical booths have been made.

The BJP had fielded Pradeep Singh from Araria constituency who had lost to veteran RJD leader Mohammad Taslimuddin in 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

From the Bhabhua Assembly seat, the BJP had given a ticket to Rinky Pandey after the death of her husband Anand Bhushan Pandey.

"Unlike other parties, the BJP does not import candidates from outside but fields its own workers".
