Few details are available, but the meeting was confirmed to CNN by the Finnish and South Korean foreign ministries, and the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that the North Korean official responsible for U.S. affairs was spotted at the Beijing airport heading to Finland.

North Korean officials are expected to meet with USA and South Korean representatives in Helsinki, Finland, for unofficial talks ahead of possible major summit meetings.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry issued a statement after 3 days of talks in Stockholm between Margot Wallstrom and Ri Yong Ho ended on Saturday.

Although no concrete announcements came out of the Stockholm summit, Wallström said that the discussions had a "constructive atmosphere".

However, he expressed that he couldn't support "people who never understood "America first" and want to manipulate the president". They were not authorised to discuss the sensitive negotiations publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The ministry added that "Sweden underlined the need for North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons and missile programmes in accordance with Security Council resolutions".

That was followed by a visit of a senior Chinese envoy to Pyongyang, ostensibly to report on the outcome of the congress, but the envoy did not meet Kim. North Korea, however, has not officially confirmed the meeting and no specific time or venue has been set.

Asked if South Korea trusted Kim, Kang said: "It's not a matter of trusting".

"It's crucial that the inter-Korean summit late next month leads to significant agreements on denuclearization", said Cheong Seong-chang, a unification strategy analyst at the Sejong Institute in Seongnam, Gyeonggi.

"I think this is a concern not just for the United States but for South Korea as well", she added.

Choe was also in the delegation that North Korea sent to last month's Winter Olympics in South Korea.

Choe, experienced in negotiations with the USA, is expected to meet the retired American diplomat as well as other retired South Korean diplomats, the South's Yonhap news agency said, citing an unnamed diplomatic source.
