Minutes after Apple announced its acquisition of magazine subscription service Texture on Monday morning (March 12), the company's senior vp, internet software and services Eddy Cue took to the stage at South by Southwest to share his vision for media curation across music, TV, film, sports and even healthcare.

The company said this is its first venture in Africa.

The first thing any and all users will get when signing up is a 30-day free trial to the service's Premium tier. Users can cancel anytime. And with Spotify's 159 million free listeners who also listen to ads, it's clear that this new concept of radio may have a long ways to go before saturation. Spotify South Africa will allow you to listen to its entire music library free of charge.

The South African pricing is a significant discount to what Spotify users pay in the US. Whereas Apple Music is now growing by 5% every month, Spotify is said to be growing it subscriber base by about 2% every month. Google does not release paid subscriber numbers for its service, Google Play Music. Families with up to 6 users can subscribe for $14.99 per month. However, Spotify is the world's biggest streaming music company with more than 70m paying customers and offers a range of music discovery tools favoured by its fans.

Spotify has today gone live in South Africa, Israel and Vietnam, meaning that the platform is now available in 64 countries worldwide.

Spotify is available via the Apple AppStore on iOS, the Google Play Store on Android, as well as via the web for desktops and the PlayStation and Xbox Stores.
