Students at the Florida high school where 17 students and staff members were massacred are now carrying their belongings in clear plastic backpacks in hopes that it will make it hard to smuggle weapons onto campus.

Students also had to walk through barricaded paths to enter the school.

"We need real change", she painted on the front of the bag.

"The people with the power to make changes keep making the wrong changes", she said.

Lauren Hogg said she appreciates the effort but criticized the school's new rule.

Last month, hundreds of thousands of people marched in cities across the country to protest gun violence and call for action.

Student Matthew Satar said if somebody wanted to hide something in the clear backpack, they still could.

"It feels like being punished", student Isabelle Robinson told CNN.

Delaney Tarr posted a photo of her backpack, saying she was "starting off the last quarter of senior year right, with a good ol' violation of privacy!"

Once inside, they were issued mandatory see-through backpacks and ID badges which must be worn at all times.

Threat for severe weather has passed
If a line does develop, it is likely to gradually weaken as it moves toward the Lower Valley by around 2-3am. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the entire area under a Slight Risk for Severe Thunderstorms.

"We come to school to learn, so I don't think that we should need to subject ourselves to these measures".

"I thought her comments were well placed to a guy who had gone off the rails. spewing the hate", Nugent said. Now, with the bags, they're sacrificing their privacy for what he and others consider an ineffective security measure.

It's unclear whether students will be allowed to have a bag within their backpack to hide personal items.

Do you agree with the criticisms being leveled against the student survivors of the Douglas High School shooting by right wing and NRA supporters? Many carried lunch in clear plastic bags. I don't remember there being a big uproar about it. "Bigger things to worry about", Twitter user Shae wrote.

But despite the outcry on social media, teachers "for the most part" have embraced the policy, said Greg Pittman, an American History teacher at the school of about 3,300. Mr Dorn, the director of Safe Havens International told Racked students could easily hide weapons in books, shoes, clothing or containers.

She said she wants to see more modern technology used to secure the school. They buy all of these different containers and put the gun in there, or they put it in a tennis shoe or wrap the gun in their gym shorts. Sports bags and musical instrument cases are being searched.

"Whenever we have some of these catastrophic events that involved a student, there's usually a short surge of interest [in clear backpacks]".

Survivors of a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, returned from spring break Monday to new security measures that some students said made them feel like they were in prison.

He has since thanked those students who were seen to be embracing the clear backpacks rule.
