In the presence of oil cartel OPEC kingpin Saudi Arabian Oil Minister, Khalid A. Al-Falih, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said efforts at artificially distorting prices were self-destructing.

Modi said the BJP leaders and its workers will observe the fast on Thursday to "expose" those handful people who "throttled" democracy by stalling Parliament proceedings during the Budget Session. I will also hold fast. This seems like a sly political move that is in contract to the much talked about and mocked fast that was observed by the congress party a day before yesterday at Rajghat, Delhi.

Amit Shah will observe a hunger strike in Hubli in poll-bound Karnataka, while party MPs will fast in their constituencies. While Union information and technology minister Ravishankar Prasad will observe the fast at Gardani Bagh in Patna, Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj will be in New Delhi.

Protesting against the disruptions, the BJP had earlier announced that the National Democratic Alliance MPs would forego salaries along with allowances for 23 days due to the washout of the second half of the budget session. "I will be fasting".

The theme of the DefExpo is "India: The Emerging Defence Manufacturing Hub" which would showcase India's capability in export of defence systems and components.

In a press statement, the BJP has said Modi will hold a day-long fast "to expose the Congress for its undemocratic style of functioning & pursuing divisive politics & anti-development agenda".

Meanwhile, reports have said that Modi will go about with his daily routine as the PM of India.

Congress communications in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala also said the BJP-led central government should be blamed for the Parliament washout.

The Congress had tried to preempt the BJP event by announcing that the party members would observe a fast on April 9 to promote communal harmony in the country.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had on Saturday (April 7) written to Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu, urging the latter to convene a special two-week session in May-June to make up for time lost during the Budget Session, which was marred by disruptions.
