At least 17 children were killed when a school bus plunged off a mountain road in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh on Monday, according to local police officials.

A 10-year-old boy is telling the story of his escape from a tragic school bus crash that killed four adults and 23 children.

Twelve injured passengers, who were rushed to the hospital are reported to be in critical condition. A Team of National Disaster Response force or NDRF has been deployed on the spot for the rescue of the victims, the rescue operation is still going on.

"Prima facie, negligent driving and over-speeding are the main reasons for the accident", he added. We have been able to account for 38 people in the bus.

The bus fell into the 200 feet deep gorge around 4 pm near Malkwal area, around 70 kilometres from Kangra. The nation's Supreme Court has called India's roads "giant killers". Last year, a truck veered off the road at the same spot where yesterday's bus accident took place.

There were heart rendering scenes at the civil hospital of Nurpur in the hill state as the parents of deceased children were inconsolable and were finding it hard come to terms with their loss.

SDM Nurpur Husain Saddique told agencies that about 30 people including 26 children died in the bus accident and ten others sustained injuries.

The bus fell 60 metres to the ground below, said police officer Sunil Kumar.

The chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, Jairam Thakur, expressed his condolence to the families of the students and assured them of a thorough investigation into the incident. "My prayers and solidarity with those who lost their near and dear ones in the accident", Modi tweeted.
