Before the 115-93 win over the Miami Heat on Monday night, Westbrook needed 34 rebounds from the final two regular season games to average another triple-double season as he went into the contest with 25.6 points, 10.1 assists and 9.8 rebounds per game. He got a little help from his friends.
Now, Westbrook hopes to prove that he and the Thunder are just getting started.
"If you're a white man in America, you should know better than to say "cotton picking" referring to anyone of us", another Twitter user wrote. "What was really fantastic to me, that even if he didn't get the 16 rebounds, the fact that he was that close again, in the second year, was fantastic to me". I thought we played phenomenal tonight.
"Feels good to be back in the postseason and the mindset of not looking forward to another vacation", Anthonysaid. Which is honestly pretty hard to deny.
"A lot of people make jokes about stat padding rebounds", he told reporters on Wednesday. "If people could get 20 rebounds every night, they would".
Bleacher Report cut together a video of every Westbrook rebound from Wednesday night, making it relatively clear that while many of his boards came from his effort to be in the right place at the right time, his absurd total was the product of a team effort. "If people could get 15 rebounds, they would". Since everybody wants to be talking. I think the mob rule mentality after mistakes is one of the worst things about America.
"Obviously, I thought we had plays where we could have prevented points, but for the most part, they (Memphis) just played really well tonight", George said. That's what it is.
I get that it was a rough year.
"I'm very, very thankful and blessed to go out and compete", Westbrook said after the game.
Westbrook collected 20 rebounds to raise his season average to 10.05 per game.
Of course, that was long before it became clear he had a shot at averaging a triple-double again this season. I guess we'll just have to wait and find out.
