On Tuesday evening at around 6pm, a passenger boat carrying almost 40 people from Devipatanam to Vadapalli of East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, capsized at Manturu village. In November, a ferry capsized elsewhere in Andhra Pradesh state, leaving at least 19 people dead. Many people are feared drowned in the boat tragedy. Massive rescue operations are on by using boats and divers. East Godavari district collector Karthikeya Misra has rushed to the spot.

The boat, which sailed from Kondamodalu, was on its way Rajamahendravaram.

Apparently due to the heavy wind and storm, they have locked the boat doors, which in turn became a curse for the passengers.

Khaja, who operates the boat, surrendered before Devipatnam police. According to Reddy, the driver of the boat had said there were 25-26 passengers onboard, however, the actual count of the passengers was 40. Most of the passengers were tribals from the region. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed the officials to launch rescue operations on war footing. Spoke to officials and asked them to ensure all possible support to those affected.

The incident came close on the heels of a boat with over 100 tourists catching fire in the Godavari River in the same district on May 11. "The river is very shallow now, so if the boat had a problem it could have reached the bank within five minutes", Ajitha Vejendla said.
