Tributes are now pouring in for Samuel.

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association confirmed the news in a Facebook post today and said the defender colidded with an oncoming vehicle on his way home after dropping his kids at school.

"We've received some bad news that former National defender and Ex-Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers player Jlloyd Samuel died in a auto crash this morning in England", the statement read. He also had loan spells at Gillingham and Cardiff before ending his playing career in Iran.

Despite being born in south-east London, Samuel represented Trinidad and Tobago and earned two caps for his country. "At around 7.55am (0655GMT) police were called following reports of a collision involving a van and a Range Rover", said a statement from Cheshire Police.

"Sadly the driver of the vehicle, Jlloyd Samuel, 37, from Lymm, died at the scene".

"His next of kin have been informed and are now being supported by specially trained officers".

It is understood that the man who was driving the van sustained serious injuries and was immediately taken to hospital for treatment.

Samuel did not get clearance in time to join the Soca Warriors in Germany and it was another three years before he made his first senior global cap in red, white and black strip.
