As for retail giant Amazon, the data it gathers from Whole Foods in another tool it can leverage to better understand how its Prime members shop, as well as how the company can get them to buy more.

The 10% discount will be valid on "hundreds or even thousands of already discounted items in each store", per The Journal. It extended that tactic by further cutting what Amazon Prime members pay at Whole Foods.

The Amazon Prime discounts take place of the stores former loyalty program, which offered special coupons and points.

To access the deals, download the Whole Foods Market app, sign in with your Amazon account, and scan the app's Prime Code at checkout.

As analysts have pointed out, Whole Foods needs to bring down its prices in order to remain competitive. The program is going to extend nationwide this summer. Mackey is confident about Prime convincing the shoppers regarding their doubts about its "Whole Paycheck" reputation which is a reasonable option for their many purchases.

According to Morgan Stanley estimates, some 40% of Whole Foods shoppers aren't Prime subscribers, so Amazon is targeting those people with the new promotion.

It is also testing last-minute deals on perishable food market. The companies previously launched free two-hour delivery from Whole Foods via Amazon's Prime Now service. Shopping at Whole Foods Market is now even more convenient with Amazon Lockers, where customers can pick up and return eligible Amazon purchases at almost 400 Whole Foods Market stores nationwide.

The annual cost for membership is expected to rise 20% from $99 a year to $119.

Since Amazon acquired Whole Foods a year ago, prices at the notoriously expensive grocery store have dropped; eggs, salmon, kale, and avocados are all cheaper now.
