Paramus school officials say they chose to hold classes Friday at the East Brook Middle School so students and staff could be together and grieve following Thursday's accident on Interstate 80 west in Mount Olive.

The Paramus school system said that the bus was taking students from East Brook Middle School to Waterloo Village, about five miles from the crash scene.

Mount Olive Mayor Rob Greenbaum, who saw the aftermath of the highway crash from an overpass, described the scene as "horrific".

Several victims were reported ejected in the crash, which knocked the bus off its chassis and onto a highway median. The bus wound up on a guardrail close to a spot for emergency vehicles to make a U-Turn onto the highway.

Crews loaded the wrecked bus onto a flat-bed truck on Thursday night. A boy on the bus says the bus toppled over and people were "hanging from their seat belts". Murphy said the truck driver was hospitalised, but officials didn't reveal his condition.

Democratic New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said that one adult and one student were killed in the crash.

The New Jersey State Police and Morris County Prosecutor are investigating the cause of the crash.

"My heart just dropped".

The bus was owned by the school district and had seat belts, according to Paramus schools superintendent Michele Robinson. "You hear the name of the school.", she said before trailing off. The school canceled all after-school activities for the week and all field trips for the remainder of the school year.

Mendez Trucking has about 40 drivers and trucks, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Messages left with the company weren't returned.

The National Transportation Safety Board is gathering information on the crash, a spokesman said.
