We've already had some on-court fury today at the Rome Masters, when Dominic Thiem destroyed his racquet after hitting a shot too long against Fabio Fognini.

But something is clearly in the air in the Italian capital, as a top female competitor's aggression completely came out following the completion of her match.

With both players locked at 5-5 in the decisive set, Pliskova smashed home a victor which was incorrectly called out much to the dismay of the Czech Republic star.

With the game in the balance on Pliskova's serve at 6-3, 3-6, 5-5 (30/30), an oversight from the umpire and line judge led the Czech to give up a costly break point that helped see Greece's Maria Sakkari claim victory.

The chair umpire acknowledged that she "lost" the ball mark and therefore said the point should be awarded to Sakkari. The victory means the 24-year-old Gavrilova recorded her first top 10 victory of the year, and her first back-to-back match wins since Acapulco in February.

The Czech exchanged a brief word with Sakkari at the net before approaching Mrozinska with an outstretched hand before withdrawing it and repeatedly smashing the chair with her racket.

It remains to be seen what action will be taken against Pliskova, but the world number five's twin sister may also face punishment.
