The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to "the family of an Australian who died in Portugal".

They were on a five-month holiday which had recently included attending a friend's wedding.

According to Portuguese newspaper Correio de Manha, cops investigating the scene found a cell phone near their bodies, noting a selfie might have caused the fatal fall.

The couple who died in a cliff fall in Portugal have been identified as Michael Kearns and Louise Benson. Officials from both the United Kingdom and Australian governments said they were providing support to the families.

The captain of the port of Cascais, 30 kilometres west of Lisbon, said he believed the couple fell while trying to take a selfie.

Local emergency services told AFP a mobile phone was found near the bodies, indicating they might have been taking photographs before they fell.

"Will be greatly missed by all of us who love them."
