The Saudi government and the Supreme Court have called on Muslims and citizens to report to the nearest court on sighting the new crescent moon or Shawwal crescent.

The period of fasting and introspection leads up to the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, the day after Ramadan ends.

Muslims are now nearly at the end of their month-long fasting period known as Ramadan, which began on 16 May 2018.

Mr Dambazau also urged all Nigerians, irrespective of their religion, to use the occasion of the celebration to pray for the peace, unity, prosperity and stability of the nation.

Beside the Central Ruet-e-Hial Committee, zonal committees will hold meetings in major cities of the country to collect evidence regarding the sighting of Shawal moon.

The committee will be tasked with the job of spotting the new crescent moon which signals the arrival of Eid Al Fitr. People from across the world try to sight the moon after sunset (when they break the fast) on 29th Ramzan.

Muslims across India will celebrate this grand festival on 14 and 15 June, 2018.

The statement asked all and sundry to observe the day as such throughout the country.

Eid is expected to fall on Friday, but the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources announced on Monday that all governments and ministries would close from Thursday and will last until Shawwal 3.
