An immigrant detained for illegally attempting to enter the United States killed himself in a Texas jail cell last month, according to a Customs and Border Protection spokesperson.

According to the report, jail officers said Munoz became combative during the booking process and was restrained and placed in a padded cell overnight. He was found unresponsive in his cell on May 13. Officers booked Muñoz at almost 10:00 p.m. on May 12 and reportedly checked on the man every 30 minutes.

The sheriff's office and Texas Rangers, who are investigating the death, didn't immediately comment. The Post report, citing unnamed Border Patrol agents, said he was with his wife and 3-year-old son and separated from them, but the federal statement made no mention of family members.

Muñoz's death occurred around the same time the Trump administration announced its "zero tolerance" policy when it comes to the prosecution of all immigrants who attempt to enter the country illegally.

Border Patrol agents said that the illegal aliens were trapped inside the cabinets and tightly wrapped with straps covering the outside, leaving them with no way to escape. "Because I don't like these children being separated from their parents, I don't like it, I hate it!"

Laredo Border Patrol agents, assigned to the checkpoint at U.S. Highway 59, discovered them after a service canine alerted the agents to the possible presence of concealed humans and/or narcotics in the truck.

The president has blamed Democrats for creating a law that requires children and parents to be separated, but no such law exists.

Marco Antonio Munoz was apprehended by agents of the Weslaco, Texas, Border Patrol station on May 11 for attempting illegal entry into the USA, according to a statement released by Customs and Border Protection.

The report was filed June 5 to the Texas attorney general's office and obtained by the Associated Press on Sunday.
