The CDC says there were a higher number of suicides in areas hard hit by the economic downturn, especially in rural areas in western states.
Despite an increased awareness and more help available than ever before, there is still a stigma attached to reaching out for help.
Researchers found that over half of the suicide deaths were people who did not have a known mental health condition. It's also just one of three leading causes on the rise. The other two are Alzheimer's and drug overdoses. From 2011 to 2015, that age bracket's suicide rate of 72.1 per 100,000 was almost six times the rate for non-veterans the same age. Suicide rates were higher among males in Maryland, ranging from about 17 to 18 per 100,000 males.
"We spend a lot time with them teaching them all of the protocols they are supposed to used to make sure they know how to deescalate a crisis", said executive director Sharon L'Herrou. "Why don't I have this?" he said. "With my dad, that's where I think it kind of went awry".
"The crisis center has always been a very busy unit for Journey Mental Health", said Peter Zallar, Journey Mental Health.
MA legislators passed a "red flag" gun bill on Thursday, a law that state Senate President Harriette Chandler said would help reduce the risk of suicide in the state. "I just really want people to know they are valuable and they are priceless and God made them the way that they are to be a blessing to other people".
More than a decade of steadily rising rates have made suicide the nation's 10th leading cause of death and one of only three causes of death - including Alzheimer's disease and drug overdoses - that are increasing in the USA, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
