Pompeo's ascendance combined with Bolton's more muted public role illustrates how the sometimes messy power dynamic in Trump's inner circle has played out going into the first-ever meeting between US and North Korean leaders.

On the matter of potentially hosting Kim at Mar-a-Lago, Trump has previously welcomed world leaders there, including Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The summit is due to be held following a rapid detente between Pyongyang and Washington - as well as South Korea - in a turn-around from a dramatic escalation of tensions past year, when the North ratcheted up its weapons programme. And a lot of business gets done on the golf course...

The episode proves Trump 'is the stronger figure. and you're not going to have useful negotiations unless [Kim] accepts that, ' Giuliani added.

The parley is back on after the USA president canceled it in late May citing the "tremendous anger and open hostility" in a statement from North Korea.

The details of these offers and what actions North Korea would take to trigger implementation could be decided in Singapore.

On Wednesday, the State Department said it was evacuating several more Americans from Guangzhou for further health screenings. One of the study's authors, Randel Swanson, described the symptoms as being "like a concussion without a concussion".

The United States and North Korea are scheduled to begin negotiations next week in Singapore over ending the nuclear weapons program of dictator Kim Jong Un.

"This is kind of gutsy, but in my view - and I think others share it - it was the right decision", said Joseph R. DeTrani, the former US special envoy to failed multilateral talks with North Korea. Before taking office, Bolton openly advocated North Korean "regime change".

Giuliani made his comments while suggesting that Israel should take a similar line with Palestinians that Trump did with North Korea.

The most strident hawk at the White House is National Security Adviser John R. Bolton.

After Bolton's initial comments, North Korea issued a statement blasting Bolton and blaming him for endangering the summit. The former journalist and ex-U.S. Marine has helped coordinate North Korea policy and is seen by Korea watchers as a pragmatic voice.

And you would be right to expect some down time during that visit including a possible 18 holes with Kim, reports Bloomberg and The Daily Beast, which cited two administration officials.

The President surprised allies and enemies alike when he called off the summit two weeks ago, saying he could not tolerate North Korea's "tremendous anger and open hostility" towards his administration.
