U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledges he is heading into "unknown territory" in his summit with North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, in Singapore. Trump and Kim planned to meet one on one, joined only by translators, for up to two hours before admitting their respective advisers, a US official said.

Balakrishnan, who received Kim, the Chairman of North Korea's State Affairs Commission, on Sunday at Changi Airport, said the summit comes after 70 years of suspicion, war and diplomatic failures.

In the same statement, the White House said the talks between USA and North Korean officials were moving "more quickly than expected", though didn't elaborate on what precisely that meant for Trump's stated goal of securing North Korea's complete and verifiable denuclearization.

The daylong summit will also include a working lunch and a larger meeting involving aides to both leaders, the White House said.

In the lead-up to the summit, U.S. and North Korean officials were convening contentious final-hour negotiations in a Ritz Carlton hotel here in a bid to narrow gaps on key aspects of the meeting.

"This is not the way conventional diplomacy would have been conducted, but perhaps you need two very unconventional leaders to have brought us to this stage", he told the BBC. He told reporters he thinks he will know nearly immediately whether a deal can be made, saying: "I will know, just my touch, my feel".
