He is likely to be Brazil's No 1 when they begin their World Cup campaign against Switzerland on Sunday.

The Reds have been looking for a new goalkeeper for a while and despite an upturn in form from Loris Karius, his shambolic perfromance in the Champions League final emphasised the need for Liverpool to search for a new number one.

But Liverpool are expected to look at alternative targets as they are unwilling to spent £79million - Alisson's buy-out clause - to strike a deal.

Alisson shone last season between the sticks for Roma and has been eyed by Liverpool, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in the current transfer window.

Thibaut Courtois is also a person of interest for the European champions and with the Belgian entering the final year of his contract, he is being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

You'd imagine the clubs want the same, given what an impressive World Cup can do to a player's valuation.

'If it's not resolved before the World Cup, then it will be discussed after it because my head will be focused only on Brazil.

'The truth is that I left everything in the hands of my agent.

Despite the transfer speculation, Alisson could yet sign a contract extension with Roma.

"There are options that we are working on, together with Roma and with respect for my club", he told Globoesporte. We will see what will happen this week'. The Mirror's David Maddock reports on Monday evening that Liverpool "will step up their efforts to land Shaqiri when he returns from the World Cup, after receiving initial encouragement".
