The move, which generated headlines around the world, didn't appear to sit too well with The Project co-host Waleed Aly when it came up during Tuesday night's episode of the news program.

De Niro, a staunch Trump opponent, had a bigger stage to lash out at: Sunday night's Tony Awards in New York City. Aly asked after the footage was replayed on screen.

The masses could not hear De Niro shouting "F** Trump" as the CBS Program Practices executive monitoring the show used the discretion to push a delete button to drop audio entirely from the telecast, Variety reported.

De Niro was introducing Bruce Springsteen, who is starring in a Broadway production of his own, which has sold out tickets for months.

His comments were bleeped from the broadcast by CBS, which issued a statement saying: 'Mr. "Boy, do we need that now".

It's far from the first time De Niro has spoken about Trump. And then after the audience burst into laughter applause, he doubled down: "It's no longer 'down with Trump.' It's 'fuck Trump!'"

President Trump fires back at Robert De Niro after Tony Awards rant
Mr Trump tweeted: " Robert De Niro , a very low IQ individual , has received too many shots to the head by real boxers in movies". The president is readying to depart his summit with Kim in Singapore Tuesday evening, Eastern Standard Time.

"I just want to make a note of apology for the idiotic behavior of my president", he said.

De Niro's "Fuck Trump" reverberated all over social media via secondhand reports of what he said.

The two-time Academy Award-winner was in Toronto Monday to promote Nobu Residences, his restaurant, hotel and condo project in conjunction with top chef Nobu Matsuhisha.

The 68-year-old star received a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre in honour of his critically acclaimed show.

Ted Nugent tweeted: 'Damn shame Robert de Niro turned into such a hypocritical America hating drug-addled jerk'.
