De Niro raised his fists in the air and simply said "f*** Trump" earning himself a sustained standing ovation.

De Niro is one of the most respected actors in the United States with two Oscar wins for "Raging Bull" and "The Godfather: Part II". As they applauded and cheered, he continued, "It's no longer 'down with Trump.' It's 'f**k Trump'".

CBS, which broadcast the award show, censored his comments on television.

De Niro has been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, and played the special counsel Robert Mueller on "Saturday Night Live".

During the show, Springsteen delivered a moving performance of his classic hit "My Hometown", basing his effort on his "Springsteen on Broadway" production. "Who's going to argue with him?"

De Niro, a noted liberal, has been increasingly critical of Trump, a Republican, at smaller show business events, but none have the high profile and audience of the Tony Awards.
