The just-happy-to-be-here, can't-we-all-get-along vibe was set by the opening song, a celebration of the ceremony's also-rans - "This one's for the loser inside of you" - sung by the hosts, Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban, and a chorus made up of ensemble members from every Broadway musical.

Garfield won best actor in a play for his acclaimed performance in "Angels in America", which also won Nathan Lane his third Tony, as closeted conservative lawyer Roy Cohn, who died of AIDS.

Neither Bareilles nor Groban have won a Grammy or a Tony despite selling millions of albums and appearing on Broadway.

"Hey Trump - I'm talkin' to you!" "F-- Trump", De Niro said, without any preamble.

In a mesmerising moment, Melody Herzfeld, the heroic drama teacher who nurtured numerous young people demanding change following the February school shooting in Parkland, Florida, was honoured from the Tony Award stage. That show also yielded the featured actress win to "Rosanne" star Laurie Metcalf. However, "Carousel" choreographer Justin Peck won the Tony, and cast member Lindsay Mendez won the the Tony for best supporting actress. "It didn't just change me, it saved me", he said.

"The Band's Visit", the wry, sad and moving new musical helmed by David Cromer of Skokie - unarguably the leading auteur stage director to emerge from the Chicago theater in a generation- triumphed Sunday night at the Tony Awards, as did Cromer himself, winning his first Tony Award of a multi-decade career dedicated to struggling characters who find themselves on life's margins.

Most Famous Goat: Once On This Island won best musical revival, meaning that its resident goat is now the most famous goat on Broadway.

Most Frustrating Beep: Robert DeNiro took the stage and then let loose with ...something that was vehemently beeped out by the producers before sullying the ears of the at-home audience.
