Russian Federation can not return to G7 until progress made, - Merkel

Speaking on the sidelines of the summit, Merkel also said it was too soon to say whether leaders would issue a common communique, adding that if they failed to do so it would be an honest acknowledgement that no agreement had been reached.

She added that with Trump's "unpredictable" leadership and the USA turn toward isolationism, the European Union needs to hone its response to a raft of issues in an environment in which global institutions need to be "newly proven".

Another image of the same gathering however suggests a more relaxed interaction, with Mrs Merkel smiling and Mr Trump making eye contact.

The two-day summit in Charlevoix, Quebec, has ended in disarray with Trump refusing to endorse the joint statement from the G7 leaders and threatening further tariffs against other nations.
