In his 36 matches in Serie A last season, Torreira scored four goals and added one assist, but, given his position as a defensive midfielder, it was his work in the trenches that was key to helping Sampdoria achieve a 10th-placed finished in the top flight of Italian football.

Arsenal are ready to swoop for Sampdoria defensive midfielder Lucas Torreira, the Daily Star has claimed.

Arsenal have until now confirmed the Bosman signing of Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus whilst a £16m deal for Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund is close to completion.

The 22-year-old has developed in to one of the best defensive midfielders in Serie A since joining Sampdoria from Pescara two years ago and he's been named in the Uruguay squad ahead of this summers World Cup finals in Russian Federation.

Detroit has been looking for a coach for a month since firing Stan Van Gundy, who was also its president of basketball operations. Some Detroit Pistons fans have been very critical of Tom Gores for taking so long to find a head coach and general manager.

According to Football Italia, Gli Azzurri had agreed to pay the €25 million release clause for the Uruguayan global and were in advanced stages of contract negotiations, when Arsenal made a competing bid.

Emery is expected to be extremely busy in the transfer market this summer and a new central midfielder is a priority as Santi Cazorla has already left the club while Jack Wilshere's future also remains in serious doubt.

The Uruguayan has made a total of 71 top-flight appearances for Sampdoria, and Arsenal are seemingly encouraged to move forward with a bid due to the player's £22m release clause and the South American's interest in representing the Premier League side.
