Herdman, who coached the women's national squad when Canada hosted the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015, says "we were singing O Canada with 60,000 people, alongside everyone that was watching".

The North American countries won with 134 votes, or 67 percent, against an upstart campaign from Morocco, which garnered 65 votes, in the Wednesday morning vote in Moscow. Their lone opponent was Morocco.

The North American proposal had lined up high-profile backers, including soccer star David Beckham, who said that "the World Cup deserves to be in great places", and U.S. President Donald Trump, who combined support for the bid with a veiled threat to those that planned to vote for competing offers.

An FA spokesperson said: "We congratulate the USA, Canada and Mexico on winning the bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup". The US, however, hosted the country on its own merit in 1994, while Mexico have twice before organised the tournament, in 1970 and in 1986. While that means Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal may all be host cities for the men's soccer showcase, Vancouver will be watching from the sidelines.

For Morocco, it was the fifth time it had bid for the hosting rights to the football World Cup, calling it "the dream of a nation".

Farmers Block Refineries to Protest Palm Oil Import
Many farmers welcomed the president's call for fairer farmgate prices as part of a food chain review a year ago . This was part of a three-day protest over plans to allow Total to use palm oil at a biofuel plant.

"Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026", Carlos Cordiero, the president of US Soccer told the delegates from more than 200 member nations following the vote. Like Canada, Japan had previously qualified for only one World Cup. It received a significantly higher rating from Federation Internationale de Football Association than Morocco's bid, offered much more certainty in terms of venues and infrastructure and promised billions of dollars more in revenue. But with the tournament expanding from 32 to 48 teams in 2026, tripling the hosts would not cause as many ripples. That's the spirit of the World Cup.

Nashville was included in the 23 cities involved in the bid, meaning a World Cup game could be played in Music City.

England, like Morocco, knows the feeling of falling short in the bid to host the World Cup.

Morocco plans to use 14 stadiums, nine of which have yet to be built with the other five due for renovation. "Why should we be supporting these countries when they don't support us (including at the United Nations)?"

All that work helped pave the way for Wednesday's landslide victory, a resounding win for the United Bid and landmark moment for North American soccer. "There would be tens of thousands of worldwide visitors that would be coming into the city, enjoying everything we have to offer", said Needle.
