Syrian rescuers and civilians recover bodies in Zardana, in the mostly rebel-held northern Syrian Idlib province, in the aftermath of air strikes in the area, on June 8, 2018.

At least 44 people were killed in airstrikes on a village in the rebel-held Syrian province of Idlib, a local activist media group and a UK-based monitor said Friday, describing it as one of the deadliest attacks in the province this year.

The Syrian Observatory for human rights (an organization based in London) reports that the death toll could rise as several injured are in critical condition. The fighting involved heavy artillery fire, the Russian military said.

In recent years, tens of thousands of fighters and civilians have taken refuge in Idlib after fleeing from other parts of the country under evacuation deals with the government.
