Val Kilmer is officially returning to his role as Iceman for the long-awaited sequel to Tony Scott's 1986 action blockbuster Top Gun. The actor had previously confirmed that he was indeed asked to come back to reprise his role as Iceman in the sequel. Kosinski previously worked with Cruise on 2013's Oblivion, a visually stylish sci-fi film where Cruise works on a seemingly abandoned Earth.

Joseph Kosinski is set to direct Top Gun 2 from a scriupt by Peter Craig, Justin Marks and Eric Warren Singer.

Tom Cruise has found a familiar wingman for Top Gun 2. The Wrap reports that Kilmer will return to the franchise to play Maverick's longtime rival in the upcoming sequel. The sequel will reportedly find the fighter pilots feeling ineffectual as drone strikes are making their skills irrelevant in modern war.

If NASA astronauts go back to the moon or to Mars, new research at the University of IL may make the trip more efficient. The two researchers then developed a statistical model which linked astronomical theory with geological observations.

Top Gun: Maverick is set to hit theaters on July 12, 2019.

Bruckheimer and Cruise are producing alongside Skydance's David Ellison. Kilmer also more-or-less confirmed this particular rumor on Facebook months ago, only to offer a halfhearted retraction after setting off a firestorm of excitement among Top Gun megafans. Tony Scott's original film may not have been a masterpiece, but it left one hell of an impression that still has us humming that "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin.'" Presumably, Top Gun 2 will be breaking out an unchained melody or two of its own.
