Canada opposed U.S. President Donald Trump's suggestion to reinstate Russian Federation in the Group of Seven (G7), four years after it was expelled from the group for the Crimea issue.

Leaders of the G7 nations spent Friday hunting for a face saving formula to mask the deep rift inflicted on the Western alliance by USA president Donald Trump's assault on global trade rules.

The statement did not mention Trump by name but he could not have meant someone else.

In response, Trump posted on Twitter that Trudeau was "being so indignant" and said that both leaders were failing to make note of higher trade barriers they have leveled against USA -made products.

"We've made a lot of progress today".

Given all the mischief Vladimir Putin creates, it can be easy to forget that Russian Federation is only the 12th-largest economy in the world, about 1/14th the size of the US.

Trump joined the leaders of major industrialized nations in an idyllic Canadian resort town after days of escalating conflict over new USA tariffs he slapped on imports of steel and aluminum.

Trump was heading into a bigger controversy over trade as other G7 leaders, including host Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, have been angered over Washington's imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from allies including Canada and the European Union. The meeting with Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom at the summit.

At the summit in Charlevoix, Quebec, Trump will hold bilateral meetings with Macron and Trudeau, in addition to attending working sessions with all of the G-7 leaders.

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing Friday for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The state-run Ria Novosti news agency quoted Kosachev as saying the sanctions were meaningless "except as an attempt by the radical wing of American politics to use all means to assert USA exclusivity in the modern world".

Trump, before jumping on Air Force One to fly to Canada which is hosting the G7 summit, called for a return to the body's pre-2014 "G8" formula.
