Canada opposed U.S. President Donald Trump's suggestion to reinstate Russian Federation in the Group of Seven (G7), four years after it was expelled from the group for the Crimea issue.

Leaders of the G7 nations spent Friday hunting for a face saving formula to mask the deep rift inflicted on the Western alliance by USA president Donald Trump's assault on global trade rules.

The statement did not mention Trump by name but he could not have meant someone else.

"On behalf of The President of the United States and the American people, I congratulate the Russian Federation and the people of Russia on the occasion of "Russia Day". "So we influenced the USA elections and he gifted us Europe for that?"

"We have been a faithful player to this commitment, we've done our best, we've shown our good intentions".

Trump was heading into a bigger controversy over trade as other G7 leaders, including host Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, have been angered over Washington's imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from allies including Canada and the European Union.
