The California-based company sells police, news and training versions of the R44, and says on its website that it's a top seller.

The FAA says the pilot was the only person onboard the R44 helicopter when it crashed in the 1100 block of Settlement Drive, causing a fire within the condominium.

The Daily Press newspaper quoted Virginia State Police as saying there was "one confirmed fatality within the residential structure".

The impact of the crash sparked up a fire at the townhouse complex, which is surrounded by several other residential units.
