Symptoms can be treated, but there is no specific treatment for the virus.

State officials are urging Pennsylvania residents to take steps to protect themselves from mosquito-borne illnesses, such as West Nile Virus.

To help prevent mosquitoes from breeding, BPHC officials advise residents to empty standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet water dishes, discarded tires, and birdbaths on a regular basis. The infected mosquitoes were collected from one trap in the Town of Ramapo during the week of June 29th as part of the County's ongoing West Nile Virus surveillance efforts. "Although the risk of getting sick from the virus is low, people with compromised immune systems are most likely to become ill and develop severe complications".

The City of Boston is aiming to reduce the mosquito population through truck-mounted aerosol spraying, and by placing larvicide in basins and wetlands, the commission said.

New Bedford is taking precaution against diseases spread by mosquitoes.

Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours - The hours from dusk to dawn are peak biting times for many mosquitoes.

Consider wearing long-sleeved shirts, long trousers and socks when outdoors, particularly when mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk, or in areas known for having large numbers of mosquitoes.

Check window and door screens to ensure that mosquitoes can not enter your home.
