This is the first positive indicator of West Nile Virus in the county for 2018.

Atlantic County is the latest county in New Jersey to report positive samples of the potentially deadly West Nile virus.

Certain species of mosquitoes carry West Nile virus, which, when transmitted to people, can cause West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain.

The virus was detected in a pool of mosquitoes collected June 18 in Easton.

Limit outdoor activity at dawn and dusk.

-Preventing mosquitos from breeding by removing stagnant water from areas such as flowerpots, plastic containers, gutters and downspouts.

The virus has been detected in CT every year since 1999.

Check that door and window screens fit properly and don't have any holes.

Old tires are a flawless breeding site for mosquitoes and should be discarded.

Serious cases of West Nile virus are rare, but can cause swelling of the brain, loss of vision, paralysis and even brain damage.
