According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Black Widow solo film now has a director, in Austalian filmmaker, Cate Shortland.

"Shortland, who hails from Australia and does not have agency representation, had a fan in Johansson, who pushed for the helmer".

While she won't be the first female Marvel superhero to have her name in the title of a movie (the third actually, behind Wasp and soon Captain Marvel), Black Widow will be getting her own film.

There's at least a shortlist of directors that's come to light at this stage, and it's an interesting list. Her most recent film, 2017's thriller Berlin Syndrome, was an adaptation of the novel by Melanie Joosten. The brilliant Amma Assante (Belle) is also on the list, as well as Deniz Gamze (Kings), Angela Robinson (Professor Marston And The Wonder Women) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate).

After a long search, Marvel Studios has finally selected a director for Black Widow. Hopefully, an announcement can't be too far away...

A film starring Scarlett Johansson's Marvel Cinematic Universe character has been rumored for the past few years, but that rumor now seems much closer to reality.

Well, folks: what do you think?

The screenplay is being written by Jac Schaeffer, who wrote The Hustle, a remake of the 198os comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels which stars Anne Hathaway, Rebel Wilson and Tim Blake Nelson and will be released by MGM next year. Got any theories on how this might fit in with Marvel's next phase of feature films? We wanna hear it all.
