Real Madrid are eyeing a swap deal involving Gareth Bale and Romelu Lukaku this summer. "I am sorry it is like this and I ask all of you, especially our followers, to please understand me", wrote the Portuguese forward in Marca newspaper.

According to Fabrizio Romano of The Guardian, the transfer fee was approximately £88 million (US$117 million), which would be more than Real Madrid paid for Ronaldo in 2009.

Ronaldo went on to express his gratitude for the time he has spent at the Bernabeu and insisted the club would always have a place in his heart.

Ronaldo, however, soured the celebrations immediately after the 3-1 win over Liverpool in the final in Kiev by indicating he had made a decision to leave, saying in a post-match interview "It was lovely to play for Real Madrid". Ronaldo scored the fourth in a 4-1 victory against city rivals Atlético, setting a UEFA Champions League record of 17 goals in a single season in doing so.

Despite the fact the club look set to miss out on Champions League qualification, there remains a hope at Chelsea that Hazard could sign a new contract if Real focus their attention elsewhere.

Mrs May however appears to have lived to fight another day, with no vote of no confidence tabled by her MPs. The Foreign Secretary quit his role in government hours after Mr Davis stood down as Brexit Secretary.

Real Madrid will always be your home.

Ronaldo scored 105 Champions League goals for Madrid - only six clubs scored more over the same period! - and has either led or shared the lead in scoring for each of the last six seasons.

"But I think the time has come to open a new stage in my life and that's why I asked the club to accept to transfer me", he said in a statement.

Although Ronaldo isn't showing any signs of slowing down at the moment - he hit the top sprinting speed of the 2018 World Cup, at 34 km/h - surely even he would have little resale value so close to his forties.

Twenty years on, he's just two games away from matching Zidane's feat. The JOE World Cup Minipod semi-final preview hosted by Dion Fanning and Paddy McKenna is here. Ronaldo scored four goals to take his tally to 85 for his country and break Ferenc Puskas' record as Europe's all-time leading global scorer.
