Unconfirmed reports said one person was critically injured.

The 1954-built plane was soon to be flown to the Aviodrome air museum, near the central Dutch city of Lelystad, via Egypt, Croatia and Austria.

ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said that ER24 paramedics‚ along with several other services‚ were now on the scene treating and triaging the injured.

Police spokesman Isaac Mahamba told South African broadcaster eCNA: "There is smoke all over and paramedics are on the scene".

Local emergency services posted a picture on Twitter showing passengers being helped out of a plane in a grassy field.

The aircraft, a Convair 340 (ZS-BRV) was taking off from Wonderboom airport.

Meiring said there were two air ambulance helicopters on the scene. It had just been refurbished for 350,000 euros ($410,000) at Wonderboom.

South African Civil Aviation Authority spokesman Kabelo Ledwaba said its investigators were at the scene and would issue a statement.
