PC government says ending York strike, repealing cap-and-trade top priorities

It does not introduce new promises but highlights key pledges from Ford to pull out of the cap-and-trade system and fight what his government calls "oppressive" taxes, including the imposition of a federal carbon price.

Ford has already made good on two key promises this week.

The speech was prepared by the government led by Doug Ford's Torys, but read in the legislature by Ontario's Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell.

The speech also promises the government will take action to reduce taxes for parents, small businesses and the working poor, and promises reductions in electricity bills.

At the cabinet's swearing-in ceremony last month, Ford and Finance Minister Vic Fedeli both promised a line-by-line audit of the previous government's spending. In its rare summer sitting, Queen's Park will move back-to-work legislation to end a strike that has been continuing at York University since March.

Long-touted measures that were promised to be at the top of the agenda, including the firing of Hydro One's chief executive and the scrapping of the sex-education curriculum, were missing from the list of legislative priorities.

The premier also announced the immediate retirement of the CEO of Hydro One and the resignation of the utility's entire board of directors.

Cap and trade funded a long list of programs which included things like cycling infrastructure, school repairs, and the incentives to boost the sale of electric and hydrogen vehicles.

HONOURING VETS AND POLICE: The government pledged to build a new monument to veterans of the war in Afghanistan and said it would create a dedicated hotline to help military families.

"Absolutely not, I'm here today, I'm taking questions", he said.

It's just a week after the new government cancelled the province's emissions cap and trade program.

"If you are going to change direction it needs to be done in a responsible way to mitigate financial risks for Ontarians", said Schreiner.

Lisa Thompson said that she was going to quickly consult with parents on how to teach sex-ed.

McMaster University political science professor Peter Graefe said unlike some previous Progressive Conservative throne speeches under the Mike Harris government, this speech had little in the way of detail on major items.
