The rescue operation, which began Sunday, included a team of global divers and the Thai Navy SEALs.

Tech inventor Elon Musk has developed a "tiny, kid-size submarine" that could help rescue the four boys and their soccer coach who remain trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand. The first rescue mission of the soccer team commenced on Sunday, July 8.

The rescue mission wasn't without tragedy: A retired Thai Navy SEAL officer, identified as 38-year-old Saman Gunan, died while placing oxygen canisters along the escape route after he ran out of air.

Attention will now be focused on the recovery of the boys and their coach; doctors who have been working with the eight boys rescued earlier last week have said they are generally in good health.

He said the group can eat, move about, and talk. Nevertheless, Musk said he still sees a future for his spontaneous invention. The phrase, a battle cheer that the elite SEAL unit adopted from the U.S. Navy, has become an global hashtag used by people to show their support and gratitude to those involved in the rescue mission.

The 12 members of a Thai youth football team and their coach rescued from a cave have been invited to Old Trafford by Manchester United.

Twelve children and one adult were trapped in underground caves in northern Thailand on June 23rd, and a rescue mission is still taking place to bring the victims home. Musk said the submarine is expected to arrive in Thailand around 11 p.m. Monday, local time.

The rescued boys had not been identified out of respect for the families whose sons were still trapped, officials had said.

Medical staff say the eight boys freed from the cave on Sunday and Monday are "healthy and smiling", but two may have a lung infection.

Musk congratulated the team who carried out the operation, which concluded successfully on Tuesday afternoon. When the first four were rescued, one of the first things they asked was how the tournament was going. They were not allowed to visit the hospital where the boys were taken.

Shortly after the full rescue was announced, President Donald Trump sent a congratulatory message.

But while Narongsak Osatanakorn, the head of the joint command centre co-ordinating the operation, acknowledged Musk's offer he said that the mini submarine would not have been practical for the cave rescue.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected".

Onlookers cheered, "Hooyah moo pa!" - a reference to the name of the boys' soccer team, Moo Pa, or Wild Boars.
