2 dead, dozens injured in explosion on highway near Bologna, Italy

At least one person was killed and around 55 were injured - 14 seriously - when two trucks collided today on a motorway near Bologna airport, Reuters reported citing local media.

The AP reports a bridge has partially collapsed.

Italian news agency ANSA reported the explosion was caused by a collision involving a truck carrying cars and a tanker that was transporting flammable substances, which exploded upon impact.

Video on social media showed the tanker bursting into a enormous mushroom cloud of orange flames and a thick plume of black smoke pouring into the sky.

Reuters Scores of people have been injured in the blast.

Authorities closed the highway in both directions as firefighters work to put out the fire. Videos show flames shooting up in the air after the explosion, replaced later by a thick black cloud of smoke.

Some people were reportedly hit by flying glass as windows shattered in nearby buildings.
