Daniel Craig will be reprising his role as the spy in the next installment of James Bond, but bosses are now hinting that Idris Elba could be next to take up the mantel.

Elba, 45, was rumored to be the next James Bond in 2014 following the hack into Sony Pictures' emails.

According to Britain's Daily Star, Bond franchise producer Barbara Broccoli told The Equalizer 2 director Antoine Fuqua that there have been internal discussions about casting the first black actor to play 007.

"It is time....it will happen eventually."
"Idris could do it if he was in shape", Fuqua said.

Fuqua probably isn't in any position for Broccoli to reveal any concrete information to him (especially if he blabs it all over the internet...), and it's likely that the conversation is still just a rumour, but it's also true that Elba probably would make a brilliant Bond. And after years of fan demand, it appears that Elba may finally have to start ordering his martini's shaken, not stirred. 'You need a guy with a physically strong presence.

The next Bond is being directed by Danny Boyle and is scheduled to be out in cinemas towards the back end of 2019. Daniel Craig will reprise his role as 007 and Helena Bonham Carter is reportedly being eyed to play the villain.

Eon Productions, maker of the James Bond films, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. MGM will distribute the film domestically while Universal Pictures will handle global distribution.

The Luther star could beat odds-on favourites like Tom Hardy and Tom Hiddleston to the role of James Bond after winning the support of producer Barbara Broccoli.
