A pair of Elba's recent Twitter posts have fueled speculation that the actor will be the next Bond with Elba both teasing and then downplaying the speculation.

On Sunday, Elba posted a series of cryptic tweets, beginning with a heavily filtered selfie accompanied by the caption "my name's Elba, Idris Elba", a clear reference to the famous line spoken by Bond.

A few hours later, the actor tweeted again and this time he wrote, "Don't believe the HYPE".

In a report from the United Kingdom publication The Daily Star, director Antoine Fuqua says that Broccoli believes it is time to diversify the role and that if it does not happen now, "it will happen eventually".

The director had added, "Idris could do it if he was in shape".

However, The Hollywood Reporter contacted a representative for Fuqua who denied the report was true. It's all made up stuff. "Not sure how it got started".

Elba, 45, made his name in gritty USA television drugs drama "The Wire" and won a Golden Globe for his role as a murder detective in "Luther", before moving to the big screen.

He has shot down the rumours in a good humoured manner of the years - including joking that he isn't handsome enough, stating it's "a compliment" and saying it's all "rumour-ville".

Daniel Craig is set to appear in the as-yet-untitled, 25th Bond picture, which is due in theaters in late 2019.
