The rapper was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel's show on Wednesday night and Kimmel quizzed him on his admiration for the POTUS - and how that correlated with his presumed dislike of former president George W. Bush, who he famously accused of "not caring about black people" in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

During an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday night, West was talking about the concept of love, particularly pushing the idea of promoting a "dialogue about the president, not a diatribe".

Kanye West has a long (and somewhat absurd) history of declaring his love for President Donald Trump - the man who's appointment to the Oval Office played a huge role in reinvigorating white supremacists and racists across the country, leading to a sharp uptick in the incidents of hate crime.

"As a musician, African-American. everyone around me tried to pick my candidate for me", he said, suggesting there was a perception that "blacks can only be Democrats".

"I spent a year-and-a-half after I got out of the hospital. just chopping up samples and it was very therapeutic, because I wasn't full Ye, I don't know if I'm full Ye now", West said. It represented overcoming fear and doing what you felt no matter what anyone said, and saying, 'You can't bully me.' Liberals can't bully me, news can't bully me, the hip-hop community, they can't bully me. "That's what makes Ye".

Kimmel asked how West could possibly be on Team Trump considering his past points of view.

Kanye may have been open about his support for Trump on a larger scale, but when it came to actual policies - and their tangible consequences - Kimmel tripped him up. After mentioning family separations at the border, Kimmel asked what made West think that Trump cared about black people "or any people at all".

"So I am presenting the award".

"I quite enjoy [it] when people are mad at me about certain things".

"I was like, OK, I'm going to have to explain this", Kim began, telling her daughter, "We have a TV show".

Kimmel quickly fired up another question, asking if Trump was a good president. Kimmel asked. "Or any people at all". "And I think that we can not forget that, whether we like his personality or not, his actions are really what matter", Kimmel fired back.

Here are a few interesting takes from the 20-minute-plus "Jimmy Kimmel Live" interview which can be seen on YouTube.

Kanye has previously flaunted a signed "Make America Great Again" - a move that saw Trump try to harness and hawk more of the merch - and posed with Republican representatives. "I think it's important for us to have conversations about mental health, especially with me being black". We never approached taking a medication.

West: "I'm into designing".
