Symptoms associated with West Nile virus typically appear 3 to 14 days after infection.

"The recent wet and increasing hot weather has created the ideal conditions for the Culex mosquito that carries West Nile Virus", Mark E. Wallace, Executive Director of the Weld County Health Department wrote in a release. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds.

Symptoms of the viral disease vary from person to person, the CDC noted.

Mosquitoes with West Nile virus have been found in Louisville.

Urban areas are more likely to have mosquitoes that carry WNV. A very small proportion of human infections have occurred through organ transplant, blood transfusions and breast milk.

In Maryland, there were five reported cases of West Nile previous year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Blasts, gunshots hit eastern Afghan city
The two gunmen seized the building and had a six hour battle, ending with 15 killed, 15 wounded , and the gunmen also slain. No militant group has yet said it is behind the attack, although the Taliban issued a statement denying involvement.

Symptoms of West Nile virus include fever, headache, body aches, a skin rash and swollen lymph glands. Those most susceptible are people 50 years old and older and those whose immunity is suppressed because of a disease such as cancer or diabetes.

There are no reported human cases at this time. Of those, 23 cases involved meningitis or encephalitis.

Ways to avoid the virus include using mosquito repellents, wearing light-colored clothing and long-sleeve shirts, avoiding outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours and not having standing water around your home.

"However, this can change from week to week and we urge people to protect themselves and do their part to reduce the spread of mosquito populations in their neighbourhoods and communities by removing standing water".

Be sure to check screens for holes and run the air conditioner when you can.
