They say a commercial garbage truck hit Ms Lyden when she veered out of the bike lane.

An Australian cyclist has been killed in a collision while on holiday in NY, police have said.

The 23-year-old was cycling near Central Park when she swerved to avoid an Uber.

Lyden was rushed from the scene in New York's Upper West Side to Mount Sinai West Hospital after the collision, where she sadly passed away.

A regard of Lyden's Facebook page revealed her living in Geelong, Melbourne and hailing from Tasmania and appearing to be on global travels.

The driver of the truck, 44-year-old Felipe Chairez, was later arrested on charges including driving while intoxicated.

The driver of the truck was taken into custody by police, who said they would evaluate him for driving under the influence after beer cans were found in his cabin.

The driver of the auto and the truck both remained at the scene to give NYPD officers their statements while the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad investigate.

Dozens of bystanders rushed to Lyden's aid. "And while we have more protected lane-miles today than ever before, this preventable death underscores the need for every major street in New York City to have a safe, protected space to travel by bike".

Lyden's family and friends are said to be shocked that her trip of a lifetime came to such a tragic end.

Ms Lyden had been working at a Waurn Ponds aquatic centre for nearly two years.
