Mourinho is without a host of key players who has just returned to training after the World Cup, so expect Ashley Young, Jesse Lingard, Marouane Fellaini and Paul Pogba to make it beyond the bench.

"He's more than ready but you can not have the players who arrived only last Monday after the World Cup semi-finals or final and three weeks' holiday".

"I said that during preseason and it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, something insane, I repeat: Preseason is hard when you don't have your players to work, that's as simple as that".

However, speaking to BBC Sport's Simon Stone ahead of last season's runners-up's opening outing at Old Trafford, the Portuguese manager damned reports of unrest within his squad and claimed he is ready for the upcoming fight. But Liverpool did its business early in splashing more than 170 million pounds (US$220 million) on Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker and midfielders Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Another player who has come through an uncertain summer with United is Anthony Martial, who was left out of his France's World Cup squad, prompting comments from his agent that he wished to leave Old Trafford to safeguard his worldwide future.

"Three days of pre-season".

"I think what Jose Mourinho is saying is "that's what I need out here on this pitch in the first part of this season".

Israel and Hamas agree on truce after deadly flare-up, officials say
The airstrike set off a powerful explosion and sent a huge plume of black smoke into the air, causing crowds to scream in panic. The escalation of the conflict in the last 24 hours comes as Egypt attempts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

The Toffees captured one of United's targets - Colombian defender Yerry Mina from Barcelona - as well as Portugal winger Andre Gomes from the same club and Brazilian winger Bernard who previously played for Shakhtar Donetsk.

United's pre-season saw them go on tour to the United States, playing five games before travelling to German for a friendly with Bayern Munich.

Now it looks like no new arrivals will be heading to Old Trafford in this window.unless Mourinho has something up his sleeve.

"When you repeat 1,000 times that my relationship with my players is not good, it's a lie, repeated 1,000 times is still a lie".

"I like my players and my group. I am going to enjoy this season again".

"I know the words you want me to say or not to say but words don't come easy".
