Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee tells Sean Hannity that his investigators are getting "closer and closer" to having all the information they need from the Department of Justice.

"If [Jeff] Sessions won't un-recuse, and Mueller won't clear the president, we're the only ones", Nunes said, according to the audio.

"I mean, we have to keep all these seats", Nunes said in the recording, obtained by the progressive group Fuse Washington and first aired on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show" Wednesday night. That's why I keep-thank you for saying that, by the way-we have to keep all these, we have to keep the majority. "If we do not keep the majority, all of this goes away", said Nunes, R-Calif.

The recording was captured by an operative who paid for entry to the fundraiser for Republican Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers in Spokane, Washington.

Nunes, who heads the House Intelligence Committee, seems to explain the main reason Congress hasn't taken up the issue is due to timing and the upcoming midterm elections.

Nunes has been a vocal supporter of Trump, and his oversight of the House Intel Committee's own Russian Federation probe was widely seen as a counter-investigation to Mueller's inquiry - largely because of Nunes' belief that some prosecutors on Mueller's team were politically biased against the president.

Nunes' spokesman called the congressman's comments "sensible ideas", The Hill reported.

When asked what the committee would've been like if he had been chairman instead of Nunes, Schiff replied it would've been "a very different path".

Schiff noted that Democrats view the investigation as ongoing and continue to conduct interviews with witnesses on a voluntary basis.

"You have to decide what you want right now because the Senate only has so much time".

"Do you want them to drop everything and not confirm the Supreme Court justice, the new Supreme Court justice?" he added.

But it was in private, at a closed-door fundraiser for a Republican colleague, that Nunes took the new step of tying the investigation to the midterm elections this fall.

"I've said publicly Rosenstein deserves to be impeached", Nunes said in the recording.
