Adalah insists the legislation should be annulled, AP said.

The nation-state law is part of Israel's so-called Basic Law, a de facto constitution.

The law, passed by parliament last month, defines Israel as the Jewish nation-state and downgrades the Arabic language to a "special status".

Arab citizens account for some 21 percent of Israel's more than 8.8 million population; they have equal voting rights, freedom of religion, speech, press and assembly, but many have long complained of discrimination.

One of the petitions was filed by Adalah, the Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, demanding the Israeli High Court to overturn it for this reason. Among those signing the petition were the Arab Higher Monitoring Committee, the umbrella body of Arab Israeli organizations; lawmakers on the Arab Joint List in the Knesset; and the committee of Arab council heads and mayors, the Times of Israel reported.

"Any law that denies Palestinians their civil and national rights is racist, colonialist and illegitimate", it said.

What would the Raiders accept in a trade for Khalil Mack?
They would have to jump through some hoops to make a trade with the Raiders, but it's not impossible. Something in the late-20s shouldn't really move the needle for Gruden and Co.

Regarding the collective rights of Palestinian citizens of Israel and the status of the Arabic language, attorneys argue in the petition that "the Nation-State Law - in violation of worldwide law - does not recognize any collective right of the Arabs as a homeland minority, as opposed to enshrining broad exclusive collective rights for the Jewish population, as if Jews were a minority requiring special protection". I'm holding the first draft of the Nationality Law, which was submitted in 2011.

Israel's justice minister, Ayelet Shaked, said on Sunday that any move by the High Court to overturn the nation-state law would lead to "an quake, a war between the authorities", Haaretz reported.

Tens of thousands of Druze Israelis, along with Jewish supporters, thronged a Tel Aviv square on Saturday night in a rare demonstration against government policy by the typically muted community. What it has is a series of Basic Laws to which the Supreme Court unilaterally accorded constitutional status. Many people, myself included, disagree with that decision, inter alia because constitutional legislation should reflect a broad consensus, whereas many Basic Laws were approved by only narrow majorities or even minorities of the Knesset.

"The real question is who is for and who is against the Declaration of Independence, and why is Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against the Declaration of Independence?"

It makes no mention of equality or democracy, implying that the country's Jewish character takes precedence, and speaks of Israel as the historic homeland of the Jews, who have a "unique" right to self-determination within its borders.

On Sunday, two Bedouin former IDF officers also called on the High Court to either change the formulation of the law so it applies equally to all Israelis or abolish it completely.
