There's no smoking within 25 feet of a New York City Housing Authority building.
The new rule was initially announced in 2016, but HUD gave all federally-owned public housing units until July 30 to implement it. Multiple fires in central IL were caused by indoor smoking, like the fire at Concord Apartments that claimed the life of one man this year.
People who live in Decatur have had more than a year to prepare for the soon-to-be change. Housing authorities, including Memphis, have said they have met with tenants and will work with people to kick the habit. The Pennington County Housing and Redevelopment Association buildings have been smoking free since April 2017. This means residents will have to leave the property to smoke.
Montgomery said smoke can travel through vents and other openings in apartment-style public housing and could impact the health of other residents.
In Richmond however, prohibited tobacco products include all forms electronic cigarettes - defined as any electronic device that provides a vapor of liquid nicotine. This, after a number of homes caught on fire because of indoor smoking.
The federal ban will save public agencies an estimated $153 million every year in costs related to health care due to secondhand smoke, as well as repairs and losses from preventable fires, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"Sometimes you need a little bit of a push and that's what this will do", said Michael Davoli of the American Cancer Society.
"Smoking actually damages the units, whether it's the paint or the cabinets", he said.
