"I don't know what it is that is behind that, but I think that's why it's critically important that Bob Mueller and his investigators be allowed to continue their work unimpeded by Mr. Trump or anyone else in the administration".

But Trump did not order a review of the clearance held by former national security adviser Mike Flynn, who was sacked from the White House for lying to Vice President Mike Pence about his conversations with Russian officials and later pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Trump cited Mr. Brennan as among those he held responsible for the investigation...

Former CIA director John Brennan is sworn in to testify before the House Intelligence Committee to take questions on "Russian active measures during the 2016 election campaign" on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., May 23, 2017.

Straight away, Democrats jumped in to defend Brennan's character and to blast Trump for pulling his clearance. "It should gravely worry all Americans, including intelligence professionals, about the cost of speaking out".

Some suggested Trump might have grander, and more nefarious ambitions: he could be testing the waters on stripping Mueller of his security clearance. "I will not relent".

Paul told reporters this week that Russian officials refused to acknowledge interfering in the 2016 presidential campaign and he said the US should stop expecting the country to confess.

He added: "So I think it's something that had to be done". He expected Hillary Clinton to play that role (were it ever to be needed), and that seemed to be solidly in the cards. So far, there's no evidence that anyone acted improperly in conducting the probe, so Trump is resorting to revoking and threatening to revoke security clearance as the only way he can lash out.

The individuals were accused - without details - of politicizing and monetizing their public service and security clearances.

On Tuesday, Brennan responded on Twitter to a tweet Trump posted calling former aide Omarosa Manigault Newman a "dog".

White House Expresses Frustration With Continued Detention of US Pastor in Turkey
The escalating dispute between the two countries has exacerbated Turkey's economic crisis, pushing the lira to record lows. American pastor Andrew Brunson has received another setback as he remains detained by the regime in Turkey.

He served as chief counterterrorism advisor to former president Barack Obama; with the title Deputy National Security Advisor for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, and Assistant to the President.

President Trump seemingly followed the advice of his new friend, Sen. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan had dismissed the threat as an example of Trump "trolling" his critics.

Not everyone on this list appears to still have a security clearance.

Trump then pointed to other investigators who worked on the Russian Federation probe and the investigation of Hillary Clinton's private email server. Last December she tweeted, "The FBI is in "tatters"? No". But he's spent 72 years following a rule of "counterpunching" and it's brought him wealth and the presidency.

"Infringement on our right to speak", Brennan continued, "and apparently the appropriateness of being critical of his president, of which in one degree or another, all of us have been". That led to the request for the investigation.

Despite being caught red-handed spying on his overseers, the Obama administration Department of Justice declined to press charges against Brennan, and he remained in charge of the Central Intelligence Agency.

But Trump's assertion to The Wall Street Journal's Peter Nicholas and Michael C. Bender on Wednesday night resembles a similar admission Trump made to NBC News' Lester Holt in May 2017, days after he fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

"This is specific to Mr. Brennan and the others are now under review", Sanders said.

It said Mr Brennan had made "outrageous allegations" against the administration.
