Yet as the assembled reporters and analysts were starting to zone out - and as Apple's stock price slipped - the company unveiled what will prove to be its sleeper hit.

Both use a new method for taking pictures called "Smart HDR", which essentially takes a bunch of pictures when you press that shutter button and then stitches them into one finished image.

At T3, we don't consider about a grand for a flagship phone to be "sky high" as such, but with mid-price phones from Huawei et al offering superb experiences for a lot less, Apple does have to really pull out the stops to make people pay that premium.

Preorders for the XS start at $1629, and the XS Max starts at $1799. Shipping starts on 26 October. It's large, with a 6.1-inch display and familiar cutout at the top of the screen for FaceID recognition. However, battery life lasts a full 1 hour and 30 mins longer than the iPhone X, the same upgrade found on the Xs Max. But maybe you're thinking, all I really want is to keep using my phone a little longer without the battery dying.

There are some new tools to monitor how much time you spend looking at your phone and some tweaks to how notifications display. Well, both the Xs and Xs Max will launch on 21 September, with preorders starting on 14 September.

The new watch, with a price tag that starts at $399 in the USA and €499 ($580) in Germany, is a more comprehensive health device. Apple confirmed that all band colours and styles will fit all generations, so existing straps can be fitted to the Watch 4.

It also has an updated accelerometer and gyroscope as well as a new built-in EKG scanner, marking the first time an EKG product has been available over the counter directly to consumers.

- Apple is trying to turn its smartwatch from a niche gadget into a lifeline to better health by slowly evolving it into a medical device.

Apple Announces The Apple Watch 4: Fully Custom SiP
Overall I found the new Apple Watch 4 a lot more attractive than its predecessors - though it's still a quite steep price point. Not because of its price alone but because this has all the good parts - well nearly all - that the iPhone XS series has.

The new iteration brings a number of upgrades, including UI tweaks and the option to apply the device's Breathe app to the watch face.

It can also detect when you fall by calculating wrist trajectory and other movements and can send that data to an emergency contact.

Falling in line with the previous speculation, the new Apple Watch has significantly reduced the size of its bezels and now accommodates a 35% on the smaller model, while the larger one has seen a 32% increase in screen size.

Appearing at the Apple event, Dr. Ivor Benjamin, president of the American Heart Association, called the heart-monitoring features "game changing", especially the ability to detect an irregular heart rhythm, known as atrial fibrillation.

It starts at $749 in the USA, £749 in the United Kingdom for the 64GB version.

iOS 12 officially launches on September 17.

Unfortunately, there's no 3D Touch but Apple is replacing it with Haptic Touch that claims to offer a similar feedback as their MacBook Pro trackpads.
